Does my race really dictate my skin conditions?

Hey Dolls!

Over the years, I know I have seen nothing but beautiful skin, whether on tv, magazines, or on social media. Having the most supple skin is and will forever be a vibe, However, did you know that your race plays a major part in your skin conditions?

If this is your first time hearing this, then I can imagine the shock on your face, because I too was blown away by this new information. I did some searching as I was creating my skincare line surrounding race and specific skin care types and skin care conditions. I came across some very interesting information. Here's a bit about what I learned, specifically for my target audience, African American women.

It is said that higher levels of melanin protect humans from sunburn and certain cancers. However, that’s not always the case. Those with darker levels of melanin are not completely protected from the sun's ultraviolet rays. In fact, having such high melanin levels can cause someone to be more reactive to inflammation and injury. In turn, this can cause long-lasting problems with hyperpigmentation (dark spots) where there may have been an insect bite or other small areas of irritation.

A HUGE common myth is that African American people do not get psoriasis. Research has shown that African Americans can not only have psoriasis but can have it a lot worse and it can be even more extensive. With psoriasis having a different look in those with dark skin tones, many dermatologists aren’t properly diagnosing their patients.

So all in all, skin conditions are significantly impacted by one's skin color. Knowing this you should really take your time in finding skin care products that not only focus on your problem but also your race.

As always remember, Psalm 46:5

Until Next Time, Ima mind my business, make sure you mind yours!
